Hard to break thru

This is my 2nd attempt to break the bars flowers, kalimantan is a stubborn fish. The first attempt failed because I couldnt park the bars at neutral color long enuf to burn the flowers in. Kalimantan adapt to PH very fast no matter high or low. This time I"ll keep doing PH shock to park the bars at neutral colors. I swing the PH from 4 - 7 constantly. Adding plenty of coral chip to elevate the PH and at the same time dumping in vinegar to lower it temporary to the desire PH and then the PH will swing up again in no time.

As witness from this 2 attempt I confirm tanning marulioides will be successful when the colors are parked at neutral. This is the same principle as tanning arowana, We call WTT- White Tank Treatment. In order to tanned arowana we need to park the colors of arowana scale at neutral hence keeping the fish in a white tank to flush out all the color pigment. When the pigment are flush only will the tanning light works on the scale.

Perhaps I may try to do a WTT on marulioides when I've the time to further confirm this theory. But WTT on marulioides will be a little different because getting the B stage to C stage we need strong lights but in the strong light stage we lose the A flowers. Tricky right? That is the reason why it took me 9 months to tuned my sp. Borneo. Too much start stop too much work. But anyhow from this experiment data I hope some adventurous hobbyist can further tune my theory and work out something else to speed up the process.

The picture above shows the formation of flowers:

A - being the very early stage of flowers and also the most unstable. A change in environment will see this disappear quickly.

B - is medium stage, the flowers at this stage is moderately stable, changing to strong lightings will see this transform to C.

C - is final stage, the flowers at this stage is somewhat permanent, but I've seen flowers at this stage disappeared leaving only the black mark minus the white end.

For very young fish we select fish from flower A stage. The more you see this type of scale the better potential is the fish performance. Or you can manipulate the scale into forming flowers by tanning. Best result is choose a good performance fish and manipulate it lol.

Marulioides Care Part 1 (Bunga)

I've been reluctant to write this but many had asked me to post how to take care of marulioides for maximum performance. The truth is you need to abused it, hence Marulioides care isn't exactly the correct terms to use. Channa Marulioides is found in most part of malaysia, lakes, pond, streams, rivers, but one thing most fisherman realized are those caught in swamp, I mean really dead stagnant peat swamp. Waters that are near black in color most time the fish had tremendous performance, beautiful colors and a lot of flowers. From this theory many tried replicating the conditions with low ph and so on. I've experiment many ways of keeping marulioides and I can concur to this, Low PH meaning Ph5 and below, I usually keeps mine ard PH4 or maybe lower, because my test kit can only measure till 4 and cant read anything lower. Low PH produce beautiful coloration. As for the bunga, yes everybody wants to know this, there is no tricks, just lots and lots of experiment. It i...

Understanding Indonesian Marulioides Variant

I would like to introduce you to some of the beautiful Channa Marulioides from Indonesia and at the same time clarify the complexity and the confusion as best I can. what is Marsum, Marbor, kalimantan, borneo, sp borneo, No.1  Marsum - Marulioides Sumatera Blue Marulioides not to be confuse with Channa Melanoptera Channa Marulioides Sumatera variant is very similar to the Malaysian variant. There is also another var found there known as Blue Maru which is greyish blue in color. No.2 Marbor - Marulioides Borneo known in Indonesia or Marulioides Kalimantan or Kali by Malaysian and Singaporean. The double line The 999/eee The yy + double line Now Kalimantan is very complex and has many variant. They comes in the 2 line bands form, the 999/eee form, the YY + double line form. But one of the key factors to tell them apart from sumatera, malaysia and thai variant is the middle exposure.  The key to ID kalimantan is t...

Malaysia Golden Arowana Challenge

This project was back in 2014, Kitty Lai wanted to know if I still have it to groom Arowana fish. So I picked a so so XB which I bid only for RM400. Its not a fish which you will find appetizing, the fish has slight PLJ, crossed barbel, very thin/translucent gold.  unformed pearlies  Very transluscent gold  crossed barbel Pictures above are what the seller sent me  Fished Arrived First Day fish in my tank First fixed was having the barbel cut and take note of the slight PLJ PLJ - Protruding Lower Jaw 2 weeks later in the dark tank, gold become more intense and I needed to pump the fish up to reduce the PLJ effect. Tanning project begins and when I went to find for tanning lights only did I realized how long it had been since I left the Arowana scene. TFC factory had closed down, for your information TFC T8 light is one of the best tanning light for arowana. I asked all the shop and they say everyone is using LED tanning l...
