Grooming Marulioides summarized

Marulioides in neutral contrast

Marulioides in high contrast

You can see actual results of newly captured Marulioides from the wild retaining its flowers and on top of it new flowers are growing.

Above is 1.5 months progress, when kept properly a newly transferred Channa Marulioides will maintain its flowers and on top of it you can immediately start grooming and have flower progress.

Grooming marulioides summarized:-

1. Choose a potential pc, not all marulioides can produce plentiful flowers. Choosing one with a good potential genetically will save you lotsa time.

2. I've demonstrated too many times, high Oxygen will cause maru to loose flowers.

3. High CO2 will encourage flowers growth. Keep your surface as still as possible. If you are willing to go a step further pump CO2 with DIY or commercial unit. Natural swamp water is high in CO2 and low in oxygen.

4. Maintain constant PH, PH fluctuation will cause maru to loose flowers and difficult to grow flowers in this condition. example large water changes or frequent water changes.

5. Tanning light is important to encourage flowers to grow. Tanning works best with fish in neutral contrast.

6. Keep TDS low, try to keep your water as close as possible to swamp water. If using artificial light do not keep Black water. Blackwater is only use when you are using sunlight tanning. Reason being artificial light cant penetrate blackwater. I use RIO Lab Series Light Tanning water conditioner to mimic swamp water because it provides all the important phytochemicals and I get very good results from this.

7. Do not keep in bare tank, please use sand, any type of natural sand.

8. Do not pump the fish, maru are naturally very thin in swamp.

I will update this from time to time incase I missed out anything and I'm only sharing of things that I've personally experience throughout the years. This is by no means the only way to groom marulioides I'm sure there are other tricks that other keepers have in their sleeves. Follow this if it helps you otherwise you can just read for fun.

Happy grooming.

  3. Hi, interesting observations and am about to pick a red to groom as to per what youve described. Can I however ask, what happens if u were to transfer the piece from ur tank to a bigger tank when it is more or less stable for deeper grooming? Will u still recommend it to be still? so no filter / air stone but just as it is? Thanks in adv!

    1. There is no right or wrong way to keep, all depends on what you're looking for, better enjoy keeping maru then to make it a burden

    1. From my observations in the wet land, temperature is on the high side, wading the swamp in the morning you feel warm instead of chilling like in stream. Another interesting aspect of warm water is they contained less dissolved oxygen, the ideal marulioides habitat.

  5. Hi bro just to check with you. I am new to channa as well. Do you use salt in your tank? Some say for channa salt is not needed but others swear by it.

    Please advise. Thanks

The science behind Channa Marulioides colors and pattern

Channa Marulioides is the chameleon of the fish, they are the champion when comes to color changing abilities. In a split second they can change from greenish brown to yellow and to orange. They can change their eye color from black to bright red. Observe your Channa Marulioides and you can see they greet you with bright yellow colors doing the maru dance, they flashes their bands to the highest contrast. The body colors are intense and their eyes bright vampire red in colors. When they are tone down and just swim about their business you notice the color is dull when they are in mid water, and suddenly sinking to the bottom with bright orange (depending on the var and PH) they keep changing and flashing their bands and patterns. But the black and white flowers will remain so in whichever mood they display. Also take note that maru shows their best colors mostly at midnight. Each Channa Marulioides comes in its own unique pattern of bands and flowers, like a fingerprint, I beli

Tanning Marulioides

Another way you can bloom the flower of your marulioides is with the tanning technique. First lets understand a little bit about the flower. The flower is actually a dead pixel, marulioides are very unique fish, they possessed the ability to change color at will like a chameleon. But when the flower is formed that scale is spoiled and no longer changes color, it cannot get darker or lighter. As mentioned many times marulioides caught in river or big water always shows minimal flower, maru caught in dead water like peat swamp shows maximum flowers. Maru would need the color changing ability to survive, they can change color to hunt and to escape from predators. Meanwhile maru living in black dead water swamp do not need the color changing ability as much or maybe the low PH somehow destroy the color changing ability and the result will be plentiful of flowers or plenty of spoiled scale. I've done experiment on maru living in fast cycled tank and they lose the flowers or in ano

Marulioides Care Part 1 (Bunga)

I've been reluctant to write this but many had asked me to post how to take care of marulioides for maximum performance. The truth is you need to abused it, hence Marulioides care isn't exactly the correct terms to use. Channa Marulioides is found in most part of malaysia, lakes, pond, streams, rivers, but one thing most fisherman realized are those caught in swamp, I mean really dead stagnant peat swamp. Waters that are near black in color most time the fish had tremendous performance, beautiful colors and a lot of flowers. From this theory many tried replicating the conditions with low ph and so on. I've experiment many ways of keeping marulioides and I can concur to this, Low PH meaning Ph5 and below, I usually keeps mine ard PH4 or maybe lower, because my test kit can only measure till 4 and cant read anything lower. Low PH produce beautiful coloration. As for the bunga, yes everybody wants to know this, there is no tricks, just lots and lots of experiment. It i
