PSB vs BB question

Recently I've suddenly received a lot of this same question regarding: can I put PSB and also BB together? or I've bought PSB do I still need BB?

First of all you shouldn't be using PSB or BB product but given us asians we love maximizing our tank and tends to overload it.

If you're lazy to read all the technical stuff just scroll down to conclusion

ok now Lets break down everything and I'll explain them thoroughly.

BB stands for beneficial bacteria, meaning any bacteria that are involved in the nitrogen cycle will be classified under beneficial bacteria.

Nitrogen cycle

Nitrification - Aerobic - Oxygen environment :
Ammonium (NH4) convert to Nitrite (NO2) and finally nitrate (NO3). This is phase 1 of the nitrogen cycle done by the usual nitro bacteria. This will be the typical phase achievable by the common aquarium, the remaining NO3 will be removed by water change or by plant. Energy involved oxygen.

Denitrification - Anaerobic - very low to zero oxygen environment :
In phase 2 we will see the completion of the nitrogen cycle where nitrate (NO3) convert back to Nitrite (NO2) convert to nitrite oxide (NO)  convert to nitrous oxide (N20) and finally to Nitrogen gas (N2). The bacteria responsible for the denitrification process typically involve the bacillus species and also PSB. Energy involved is organic carbon.

So there are 2 phases in the nitrogen cycle, and phase 2 is almost impossible to achieve in the typical aquarium environment because of the lack of the organic carbon.

BB is usually referred to the nitro bacteria in phase 1 when PSB also falls under BB. The differences with BB and PSB is that BB as in the chart above thrive in oxygen environment and PSB thrive in low oxygen environment.

Conclusion
It is therefore essential that BB referring to the nitro bacteria compliments with PSB in the low oxygen environment because in your tank you will have high oxygen area and also low oxygen area (example in the substrate). Then you've cover both this area which in my opinion the low oxygen area is the red zone, danger zone. Food particle falls or gets trapped in the low oxygen area will easily get fungus and breed nasty bacteria if without PSB.

So there you go, PSB and BB should be use together, but better still, lower your bioload by reducing fish or increasing your tank size and forget about this 2 product.

added noted: Many commercial brand claims they have nitrification bacteria in a liquid bottle, as you now know, nitrification occurs in aerobic environment and they use oxygen as energy source. Logically non will survive in a liquid sealed bottle. Only get your BB or nitrification bacteria in endospore stage. Endospore is when the bacteria is in the dormant stage that waits for nitrogen and carbon and they'll spring to life. In this stage they will not die even when there are no oxygen and no food.

PSB on the other hand can use light as energy source to survive even without oxygen, so they will survive in a sealed bottle provided they have accessed to light. This is the reason PSB bottle are always translucent to allow lights to passed through.

Comments

  1. A great write up!
I have some questions if you dont mind.
    - Some users and sellers solely use PSB and promote PSB as the greater solution for Aquarium wether it be in any form of Filter setup (canister, top filter, .etc). They use for new tank and weekly maintenance
    What is your comment?

    - Some seller also suggest use PSB to kick start your new tank and then use Nitrifying Bacteria after that as maintenance.
    Any comment?

    - Some users who use liquid Nitrifying Bacteria say they love it and it works.
What is your comment and could it be a placebo effect?

    Hope to hear your thoughts

    1. The article has answered the usage for both PSB and BB

  2. Great information sir, but why do we still need to use PSB when we have API zyme and seachem pristine bacteria that clear sludge? And I can’t even find European and American products that sell PSB?

    1. All of their products only sell BB and sludge eater bacteria. For PSB, only asia countries sell these products, is it BB and sludge eater bacteria can totally replace PSB since they’re so hard to maintain and they can’t survive in high oxygen area if I only use PSB to maintain my tank?

  3. PSB is popular in Asia, if not mistaken it was discovered in asia the benefit they provide when used for fish.

Another reason why PSB is popular in Asia is bcoz of the cheap price, if you use mat salleh product doing the same thing as PSB, expect to pay 2-3x the price of the same thing.

You cannot only use PSB, PSB needs to compliment with nitrification bacteria as explained in the article.

    1. Thank you for replying sir, I’m staying in Malaysia and most of my local fish store promote to all their customers use PSB only to maintain their tanks. And surprisingly so far I didn’t heard of their customer’s aquarium crash. This is why I’m so confuse. Thanks again for your info.

The science behind Channa Marulioides colors and pattern

Channa Marulioides is the chameleon of the fish, they are the champion when comes to color changing abilities. In a split second they can change from greenish brown to yellow and to orange. They can change their eye color from black to bright red. Observe your Channa Marulioides and you can see they greet you with bright yellow colors doing the maru dance, they flashes their bands to the highest contrast. The body colors are intense and their eyes bright vampire red in colors. When they are tone down and just swim about their business you notice the color is dull when they are in mid water, and suddenly sinking to the bottom with bright orange (depending on the var and PH) they keep changing and flashing their bands and patterns. But the black and white flowers will remain so in whichever mood they display. Also take note that maru shows their best colors mostly at midnight. Each Channa Marulioides comes in its own unique pattern of bands and flowers, like a fingerprint, I beli

Tanning Marulioides

Another way you can bloom the flower of your marulioides is with the tanning technique. First lets understand a little bit about the flower. The flower is actually a dead pixel, marulioides are very unique fish, they possessed the ability to change color at will like a chameleon. But when the flower is formed that scale is spoiled and no longer changes color, it cannot get darker or lighter. As mentioned many times marulioides caught in river or big water always shows minimal flower, maru caught in dead water like peat swamp shows maximum flowers. Maru would need the color changing ability to survive, they can change color to hunt and to escape from predators. Meanwhile maru living in black dead water swamp do not need the color changing ability as much or maybe the low PH somehow destroy the color changing ability and the result will be plentiful of flowers or plenty of spoiled scale. I've done experiment on maru living in fast cycled tank and they lose the flowers or in ano

Marulioides Care Part 1 (Bunga)

I've been reluctant to write this but many had asked me to post how to take care of marulioides for maximum performance. The truth is you need to abused it, hence Marulioides care isn't exactly the correct terms to use. Channa Marulioides is found in most part of malaysia, lakes, pond, streams, rivers, but one thing most fisherman realized are those caught in swamp, I mean really dead stagnant peat swamp. Waters that are near black in color most time the fish had tremendous performance, beautiful colors and a lot of flowers. From this theory many tried replicating the conditions with low ph and so on. I've experiment many ways of keeping marulioides and I can concur to this, Low PH meaning Ph5 and below, I usually keeps mine ard PH4 or maybe lower, because my test kit can only measure till 4 and cant read anything lower. Low PH produce beautiful coloration. As for the bunga, yes everybody wants to know this, there is no tricks, just lots and lots of experiment. It i
